Black Mold vs. Regular Mold: What Lawton Homeowners Should Know

When people find dark spots on a wall, the first question is usually: “Is this black mold?” The term usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a greenish-black mold that grows on materials that stay wet for a long time, like drywall and ceiling tiles.

But color alone does not tell you which mold you have, and many common molds are dark. What matters most is how much mold there is, why it is growing and how it is removed.

You cannot identify mold by color

Many types of mold look black, green, gray or brown depending on what they are growing on and how old the growth is. The only way to identify a species is laboratory testing. For most homes, though, identification does not change the plan: any significant mold growth indoors should be removed and the moisture problem fixed.

Health concerns

Exposure to mold can cause allergy-like symptoms such as stuffy nose, coughing, wheezing and itchy eyes, and it can be worse for people with asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems. If you have health concerns, talk to your doctor.

Why Stachybotrys points to a bigger water problem

Stachybotrys needs materials to stay wet for an extended period. If you have it, there is usually a long-term leak, flooding that was not dried, or chronic humidity. Find and fix the water source, or the mold will return. Our guide to signs of hidden water damage can help you look.

How professional mold remediation works

  1. Inspect and find the moisture source
  2. Set up containment and negative air pressure so spores do not spread
  3. Remove moldy porous materials such as drywall and insulation
  4. Clean and treat framing and other salvageable surfaces
  5. HEPA vacuum and air scrub the work area
  6. Dry the structure and confirm with moisture readings
  7. Rebuild what was removed

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I test for mold before remediation?

If mold is visible, testing usually is not needed to decide that it should be removed. Testing can help when you smell mold but cannot find it, when there are health concerns, or when you need clearance documentation after remediation.

Can I remove a small patch of mold myself?

Small areas on hard surfaces can often be cleaned by a homeowner with gloves, a mask and good ventilation, as long as the moisture source is fixed. Larger areas, or mold inside walls, should be handled with containment.
