Burst Pipe? What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Burst pipes are one of the most common causes of sudden water damage in Oklahoma homes, especially during hard freezes. A pressurized supply line can release a large amount of water in a short time, so what you do in the first half hour makes a real difference.

Keep this checklist handy — and if you are reading it during an emergency, start with step one.

1. Shut off the main water valve

Find your main shut-off. In many Lawton homes it is near the water heater, in a utility closet, in the garage, or where the line enters the house; some homes only have a shut-off at the meter near the street. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you cannot find it, call the city water department or a plumber right away.

2. Turn off electricity to wet areas

If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, turn off the breakers for those areas — but only if you can reach the panel without standing in water. If you cannot do it safely, leave the building and call for help.

3. Open faucets to drain the lines

Open a cold-water faucet at the lowest point of the house to drain remaining water out of the pipes. If the pipe froze, opening faucets also relieves pressure on other lines that may be close to bursting.

4. Move what you can

  • Lift furniture off wet carpet and place foil or plastic under the legs.
  • Move electronics, documents, photos and rugs to a dry room.
  • Remove wet items from the floor of closets and cabinets.

5. Document and report

Photograph the broken pipe, the water and every affected room before cleanup. Then call your insurance company to open a claim. Our insurance claim guide explains what happens next.

6. Call a plumber and a restoration company

The plumber fixes the pipe; the restoration company removes the water and dries the structure. Do not wait to start drying until the plumbing repair is done. ICR provides 24/7 water damage restoration in Lawton and can begin extraction while repairs are arranged.

Preventing the next one

Most burst pipes in Southwest Oklahoma happen during cold snaps. Insulating exposed pipes, dripping faucets on very cold nights and keeping cabinet doors open on exterior walls all help. See our full guide to preventing frozen pipes in Lawton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a shop vac to clean up a burst pipe?

A shop vac helps with small amounts of surface water, but it cannot remove water that soaked into carpet pad, subfloor or walls. Moisture meters and professional drying equipment are needed to confirm the structure is dry.

Is a burst pipe covered by insurance?

Sudden and accidental pipe bursts are commonly covered by homeowners policies, while the pipe itself and long-term leaks may not be. Check your policy and ask your insurer.
